DUBAI – Fujairah is preparing to welcome athletes and spectators for the second round of the Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Jiu-Jitsu Championship, taking place from March 27 to 29 at Zayed Sports Complex.

Now in its third edition, the championship continues to draw participation from leading clubs and academies across the UAE, reinforcing its status as a prominent fixture on the country’s sporting calendar.

The three-day event is expected to showcase a wide spectrum of talent, with competitors spanning multiple age groups and divisions. Organisers anticipate strong attendance, with families and supporters set to fill the stands as athletes compete in one of the UAE’s most established jiu-jitsu tournaments.

Event schedule

According to the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, the competition will begin on Friday with the Under-18, Adults and Masters divisions for both men and women.

The schedule continues on Saturday with bouts in the Under-14 and Under-16 categories, before concluding on Sunday with the Under-12 and Kids divisions.

The structured format ensures consistent action throughout the weekend, providing a platform for athletes at different stages of their development to test their skills in a competitive environment. The event also offers spectators an opportunity to witness emerging talent alongside more experienced competitors.

Talent pathway

Since its inception, the championship has played a key role in identifying and nurturing talent within the UAE’s jiu-jitsu community. Regular competition has enabled athletes to refine their performance and gain valuable experience, particularly those aiming to represent the national team at international events.

Hosting the second round in Fujairah highlights the Federation’s approach to staging events across multiple emirates. This strategy aims to broaden access to the sport, encourage grassroots participation and strengthen engagement with local communities.

Mohamed Salem Al Dhaheri, Vice Chairman of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, emphasised the importance of the championship in advancing the sport’s development across the country. He noted that the event contributes to building a strong sporting culture while enhancing jiu-jitsu’s presence within communities.

He added that the championship continues to evolve as a central event on the local calendar, offering a competitive platform that raises performance standards and fosters closer connections between families and the sport. The initiative also supports long-term growth by attracting new participants and providing athletes with a structured pathway to progress.

Club ambitions

Coaches and clubs are approaching the second round with clear objectives, particularly as the championship unfolds over a season comprising multiple rounds. Wissam Motea Al Ahmad, Under-18 coach at Baniyas Club, highlighted the intensity of competition, describing the event as a significant test for athletes due to the high level of rivalry between clubs.

He stated that preparations have focused on improving performance and building on results achieved in previous rounds and editions. Clubs are aiming to accumulate maximum points throughout the season, with the ultimate goal of securing the overall title.

The championship forms part of an eight-round series held across the UAE, including five rounds in the Gi category and three in the No-Gi category. The format is designed to enhance competition between clubs while supporting athlete development and reinforcing jiu-jitsu’s role as one of the most widely practised sports in the country.
